There are a number of steps you can take to stay as safe as possible while walking near roads.

  1. STOP, LOOK & LISTEN!
  2. Where possible only cross at a pedestrian crossing or at traffic lights.
  3. Never cross the road between parked cars.
  4. Never cross at a bend.
  5. If there is a footpath, use it!
  6. If there is no footpath, always walk towards oncoming traffic and stay as close to the side as possible.
  7. If there is space, walk two abreast. If the road is narrow, walk in single file.
  8. At night or on poorly lit roads, wear a high visibility vest or other fluorescent clothing.
  9. Carry a torch on country roads.
