What is Sugar?

Sugar is found in carbohydrate foods and is a source of fuel for the body. Sugar also forms naturally in some foods like fruit and is added to other foods to improve taste.

It's important to have some sugar in our diet for energy but we should try to avoid overly processed foods as they tend to be very high in sugar.

Our blood is made up of a simple sugar called glucose. When we eat sugary foods our body reacts by releasing insulin from the pancreas to level off the sugar. If we eat foods that are too high in sugar too often then our body can become less effective at this. If our body becomes unable to perform this task we can develop a disease call Type 2 Diabetes.

Sugar sweetened drinks are incredibly high in sugar and have little to no nutritional value in them. If you are going to cut out anything from your diet, fizzy drinks would be a good candidate.
