The Difference between Physical Health and Mental Health:

When we talk about being healthy, we tend to focus on our physical health, so how fit we are, how fast we can run and how strong we are, but exercise also have a huge impact on our Mental Health as well.

Mental health is to do with your emotional well-being.

What is Mental Health?

Mental Health is all about

  • How you feel about yourself.
  • How you treat other people.
  • How you deal with everyday problems in life and help up build up a natural resilience

Supporting your Mental Health

There are lots of things that we can do to support our Mental Health and contribute to our community/school/home in a positive way

We've all heard of getting your 5 a day when it comes to fruit and veg, we can also get 5 a day for our Mental Health

1. Give

Doing nice things for other people makes us feel good about ourselves. By giving our time to others it helps us to feel valued and needed. Giving doesn't have to be something major, it can be as small as smiling at someone or paying them a compliment. If everyone gives more we end up with a more compassionate and inclusive society.

2. Connect

As humans we are designed to be social, we are social animals! Connections with other people can be as vital as things like food and water. Our personal relationships with family and friends shape the people we grow up to become and are vital for our health and happiness. So working everyday to make sure these relationships stay strong is important. Little things like making sure we eat a meal with our family at least once a day, talking about the positive things that happened in your day and making time to catch up with friends are all positive ways of connecting with people and boosting our mental well-being.

3. Be Active

Exercise plays a key role in maintaining and boosting our mental health and well-being, how does Exercise and Physical Activity help?

  • Improves your mood - Exercise makes you feel happy. This is down to endorphins that get released when we exercise. Endorphins are mood elevators, meaning they make us happy!
  • Improves brain development and function - The fitter and more active we are, the more active our brain becomes. Our brain is like any muscle, the more we use it the stronger it becomes. Regular exercise helps us to concentrate and focus more.
  • Improves self esteem - Exercise is a great way to make us feel confident and secure in ourselves. It has the ability to make us feel good about ourselves.
  • Fights stress and anxiety - Regular exercise is a great way of reducing the things in life that cause stress. Exercise allows our mind time to relax and unwind, which is normally a good way of dealing with stress.
  • Helps you sleep - Exercise is a great way of helping your body to relax into better sleep patterns at night. It gives our body the chance to recover better from the days activities which in turn gives us more energy the next day.

The key to staying active is to find something that you enjoy and that fits into your daily life and routine

4. Keep Learning

Learning is one of things that we tend to forget about when it comes to maintaining a positive mental health. Our Brain is a muscle and like all muscles it needs to be challenged to develop and become stronger. Paying attention in school, doing all our homework and trying to learn new things everyday is a great way to boost confidence and self esteem

5. Take Notice

We live in a busy world, we are constantly being distracted by phones, computer games and television. While these are all very important for keeping us connected with the ever changing world, taking a few minutes each day to put your technology away and just look at the world around you, this is a very easy way to give your mind time to relax and recharge. Give it a go and you'll be surprised at what is going around you.
