Active Cities
The Active Cities project is funded by Sport Ireland through the Dormant Accounts Fund (DAF).
An Active City will strive to create social norms about the benefits of sport and physical activity, create programmes and opportunities for its citizens regardless of ability or age, work in partnership to increase physical activity & decrease inactivity, and create/maintain environments where sport & physical activity can happen, working toward healthier lifestyles of their citizens.
The Active Cities concept is built on the principles of the Global Action Plan for Physical Activity (GAPPA) developed by the WHO in 2018.
Using GAPPA the project will be broken down into four Main Pillars
Vision: The vision of Active Cities is to create, maintain and increase the numbers of citizens, regardless of age and ability, participating in sport and physical activity in their city.
Mission: The mission of Active Cities is to create the opportunity for citizens to lead healthier lifestyles in the context of sport & physical activity.
While each project will be unique in how they carry out actions under the four guiding pillars, a culture of partnership, and multi-city collaboration is encouraged.
Eight Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs) with responsibility for Ireland’s 5 cities have been selected by Sport Ireland to deliver the Active Cities project in Ireland. These include,
- Fingal County Council Sports Office
- Dublin City Sport and Wellbeing Partnership
- Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership
