Active School Flag



Active School Flag is a Department of Education and Skills initiative, supported by Healthy Ireland. The initiative encourages a partnership approach and empowers schools to become more proactive in approaching your local Sports Office Fingal’s Sports Office aims to support teachers to provide inclusive physical activity opportunities for students of all interests and abilities. Fingal can help raise awareness about the many and varied physical activity opportunities that are available in local communities to compliment and support school PE programmes and to promote physical activity. ASF provides a great opportunity to display the great work that is happening in Irish schools to get more children and young people, more active, more often.

(Useful Tips)

1. Organisation:

  • Organise ASF committee with some inactive kids on it.
  • Read through Application Guideline Booklet and visit ASF website.
  • Put notice board activities for the week in the school.  
  • Put P.E resources easily accessible for teachers in the hall.

2. Random Ideas: 

  • Bizzy Break in bad weather or ‘go noodle’ website – interactive games for classroom. 
  • Principals makes an announcement over intercom on upcoming activities in school or achievements over the weekend of pupils e.g. Johnny won his black belt or local club won u14 Championships. 
  • Football Free Fridays for schools orientated towards just football in yard, have other activities instead.
  • Older Children 5th/6th students in school to teach younger children games/activities during breaks/lunches (could do it in station format). 
  • Activity for Treats – if children good in class get activity time as a treat. 
  • Active Schools Weeks (Have to run one to achieve flag):

 Ideas may include:

  • Lunch time Displays e.g. Irish Dancing, Karate, Table Tennis      
  • Emphasise fun activates as opposed to competitions     
  • Involve partnerships e.g. Parents or Community Games

3. What ASF Assessors are looking for:

  • Broad and Balanced P.E curriculum involving at least 5 of the 6 strands.
  • Whole school participation.
  • Self-Evaluation on what’s working/not working.
  • 3 Areas: P.E, Physical Activity e.g. walking/cycling to school and Community Links e.g. initiatives involving parents, local businesses or community centres in area.
  • Tangible and Verifiable Evidence e.g. we do Busy Breaks on wet days (possible video/photograph). 
  • In each section on application form (P.E, Physical Activity & Community Links) state 2-4 improvements that were or will be completed in the school.
